Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship Through Naturalisation

To qualify for British citizenship through naturalisation, applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements.

Residency Requirements

You must satisfy strict residency requirements to be eligible for naturalisation:

Length of Residence

You must have lived in the UK lawfully for at least 5 years before applying. If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, this period is reduced to 3 years.

Continuous Presence in the UK

During the qualifying period, you are required to have been physically present in the UK and must not have exceeded the allowable time spent outside the country:
No more than 450 days outside the UK in the past 5 years (or no more than 270 days if applying based on marriage to a British citizen).
No more than 90 days outside the UK in the 12 months immediately before applying.

Holding Settled Status

You must have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or permanent residence for at least 12 months before applying. This requirement does not apply if you are married to a British citizen.

Good Character

Applicants must prove they are in a genuine and subsisting marriage, civil partnership, or long-term relationship with their UK-based sponsor.

If not already married, the couple should be planning to marry or enter a civil partnership within 6 months of the visa being granted (for Fiancé Visas transitioning to Spouse Visas).

Generally, evidence of living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years prior to application can support the claim.

Acceptable evidence includes marriage certificates, shared financial responsibilities, communication records, or proof of cohabitation.

English Language Proficiency
